Wireless Technology for the SSDs
You do not need to be a physicist to understand the advantages of SSDs (Solid State Disk) compared to the HDs (Hard Disk): no moving parts (no mechanical parts), much less power consumed, very little heat produced, total silence, extremely competitive read/write data amount and, above all, performances that are improved continuously. In fact a new power supply system has been developed. This power supply system utilizes a boost converter instead of a charge pump, a higher power efficiency is obtained and less energy is required. The power consumption can be reduced by about 68% and the chip areas of the NAND Flash memories can be sized down by 5 to 10% reducing the costs, thanks to the charge pump elimination.
The last innovation is the use of the wireless technology. The researchers of the Keio University, using an inductive-coupling wireless technology, want to realize SSDs that need less power and less components. With this technology the energy consumption could be reduced until 50% and the loaded LSI packages could be reduced approximately of 12 %.
