Major USB latest development is USB OTG, Wireless USB and USB3.0. There has been much talk since the formation of the intel group anouncing USB 3.0. The USB 3.0 specification expected in 2008.

USB News is a great non-profit website for USB news. Originally started by John Koon of San Diego, CA in 1997. USBNews is the oldest continually running USB News site on the World Wide Web. Outside interests and lack of time to devote to the site, prompted Mr. Koon to transfer ownership of USBNews to Jeff Roberts aka USBMan just before Christmas 2001. USBNews.net and USBNews.com were combined into a single web site on March 28, 2002.
Super-fast USB 3.0 technology may begin to supersede USB 2.0 in 2008. Drawing on technology developed by HP, Microsoft, NEC, NXP, Texas Instruments, and Intel, a USB 3.0 Promoter Group hopes to deliver by mid-2008 a proposed spec for backwards-compatible USB ten times faster than today's 480Mbps technology.

USB 3.0 is aiming for 10 times the bandwidth of current USB2.0 solutions, or approximately 5Gbps. Since this requires fiber optic cabling, USB 3.0 will add a length of optical data cable to the mix, though USB 3.0 will retain full compatibility with USB 2.0.
A useful update to stay tuned to is the pcworld article. Intel stated that the USB 3.0 specification would be optimized for low power and improved protocol efficiency. The USB 3.0 ports and cabling will be designed with both copper and optical cable capabilities, meaning even higher speeds will be possible in the future.
