Atmel AT91SAM7L ARM7 Microcontrollers
Atmel® Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML) recently announced the AT91SAM7L series of high-performance, ultra-low power ARM7TDMI®-based microcontrollers. The AT91SAM7L series feature embedded power switches controlling multiple power islands and programmable voltage regulators to reduce power consumption in active and standby modes. The AT91SAM7L128 and the AT91SAM7L64 are available now; packaged in a 128-pin LQFP package and a 144-pin 10×10mm 0.8mm ball pitch BGA package. Pricing is below US$4 in volumes of 10,000 units. AT91SAM7L Features The AT91SAM7L series features innovative power reduction techniques for both active and standby modes. In active mode, the power consumption is optimized via a programmable operating voltage, operating frequency, and peripheral clock activity, and the use of DMA instead of the CPU for data transfers. The SAM7L operates in single supply mode down to 1.8V and consumes 0.5mA/MHz typical in active mode when executing code out of its Flash memory. The power consumption in the different standby modes is controlled via power switches, scalable voltage regulators, and the use of sampling techniques on Voltage Monitors, Power On Reset and Brown Out Detector instead of continuous measurement. This provides a higher level of granularity than is available in competing products, while achieving at least the same levels of power saving. In power down mode, the AT91SAM7L consumes only a typical 100nA, which is believed to be a unique feature for 32-bit MCUs. In Power Down mode, only the Fast Wake-up (FWUP) pin is supplied, allowing a system wake-up through a simple push button. This feature can be used to control power on/off in applications such as calculators. In Backup mode, only the supply controller, the zero-power POR and the 32kHz oscillator remain running. The RTC, the 2K backup SRAM, the BOD, the charge pump, the LCD voltage regulator and the LCD Controller can be set on or off separately. This mode can be used when time, context or display need to be saved even if the main application is not running. In Wait mode, the 2MHz RC oscillator provides a rapid wake-up time for fast external event management. The AT91SAM7L128/64 embeds LCD features. These include a Segment LCD Controller, built-in drivers and the programmable LCD power supply for contrast control comprising a regulated Charge Pump and an adjustable Voltage Regulator. It is intended for monochrome passive liquid crystal displays (LCD) with up to 10 common terminals and up to 40 segment terminals. The AT91SAM7L series has two members, the AT91SAM7L128 and the AT91SAM7L64 with respectively 128k Bytes and 64k Bytes of Flash memory. The AT91SAM7L series also integrates a wide range of peripheral functions, including USART, SPI, Timer Counter, RTC and Analog-to- Digital Converters. The AT91SAM7L128/64 System Controller includes a Reset Controller capable of managing the power-on sequence. Correct device operation can be monitored by a built-in Brown Out Detector and a Watchdog Timer running off an integrated oscillator. This complete set of system functions minimizes the number of external components as the chip can run at maximum speed without any external oscillator. The SAM7L is supplied with a low-cost Starter Kit, the AT91SAM7L-STK, and runs the comprehensive set of application development tools that has been built up over the years for Atmel's ARM®-based microcontrollers. Y-Lynx new wireless module YLX-TRM8053-025 is a powerful combination of a full featured ISM band transceiver together with an ultra flexible Communication Controller (LibIC[tm]). The YLX-TRM8053-025-05 is intended for low power wireless sensor networks with an emphasis on battery powered (down to 2.4V) applications where outstanding battery life can be achieved if full use is made of the Communication Controller's power saving modes.
ITOX, a provider of embedded x86 products, introduced a new Mini-ITX motherboard utilizing the Intel Q35 Express chipset and ICH9 I/O controller hub. The BL100-N Mini-ITX board addresses the key requirements of embedded computing designs - Cost, Revision-Stability and Long-Term Availability. Generating test signals for today's COMINT (Communication Intelligence) systems requires far more features than a standard signal generator or RF test source can offer. The IZT S5000 COMINT Stimulator is designed to simulate realistic RF spectrum usage for these systems. The product generates up to several hundred realistic signals of different bandwidth with real content. One IZT S5000 covers an instantaneous bandwidth of 120MHz anywhere in the frequency range up to 3GHz.
Xilinx, Inc. (Nasdaq: XLNX) announced a flash-based configuration and storage solution for the Virtex(R)-5 family that delivers new levels of configuration performance for meeting today's high-speed connectivity requirements. The solution includes a new 128Mb Platform Flash XL configuration and storage device, a next generation Platform Cable USB II development tool, and the Xilinx(R) Virtex(R)-5 FPGA PCIe(R) 1.x and 2.0 Embedded Processor Board.
Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] has awarded VMETRO Inc. a contract to supply Vortex Data Recording systems to support Lockheed Martin's work on the F-35 Lightning II test laboratory. The Data Recording systems are based on VMETRO's Vortex VME Open Data Recording platform. The Vortex system will be incorporated into Lockheed Martin's instrumentation and test plan for Lightning II. The award value exceeds $660,000. Delivery will occur in 2008.
Synopsys, Inc. (NASDAQ: SNPS), a world leader in software and IP for semiconductor design and manufacturing announced the release of the TSMC Modeling Interface (TMI) methodology, which has been developed from Synopsys' production-proven protocol for integrating custom device models into HSPICE®, HSIM[tm] and NanoSim® transistor-level circuit simulators. ADLINK PXI-3920 and PXI-3910 3U PXI Controllers
ADLINK Technology Inc. recently released the PXI-3920 (Intel® Pentium® M 760) and PXI-3910 (Intel® Celeron® M 760) 3U PXI controllers. Both the PXI-3920/3910 are designed to be the core of a hybrid testing system — able to control bench-top instruments through different interfaces (including LXI, GPIB, USB and serial) by integrating multiple I/O interfaces. The PXI-3920/3910 is the first 3U PXI controller to incorporate dual Gigabit Ethernet ports. This feature allows the use of one port for LAN connectivity while the other port provides determinative bandwidth and latency for the connection with LXI instruments. Atmel AVR RZ Raven 2.4 GHz Wireless Evaluation Kit
Atmel® Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML) recently announced the AVR® RZ Raven evaluation kit. The RZ Raven kit provides designers a ready-to-use development platform in the rapidly growing low power wireless market for the 2.4GHz ISM frequency band available worldwide. The kit utilizes the AVR picoPower(tm) technology in combination with the superior RF performance offered by the AT86RF230 2.4 GHz ISM transceiver. The new kit is available now at a resale price of US$99. The RZ Raven kit comprises two Raven boards, one USB Stick and a selection of firmware application and software that will dramatically reduce time to market for designers considering short range wireless ISM band applications based on IEEE802.15.4(tm), ZigBee® or 6LoWPAN. The Raven board can be used as a multi application wireless node with a LCD graphical user interface. It has two AVR picoPower microcontrollers: an ATmega1284P that can be used to control RF application stacks, and an ATmega3290P that controls the display and user interfaces. The Raven contains a custom LCD display, a 5 position joystick, a microphone and a speaker allowing the evaluation of a variety of user interactions that are appropriate in the target wireless applications. To support application development the following functionalities are available: graphical user interface, communication ports, ATmega1284P port pins available on headers, on-board temperature sensor, voltage sensor, relay driver, boot loader and ISP support for programming. The USB stick can serve as a PC gateway to the wireless network, or as the hardware platform for wireless protocol analyzer. It is based on the AT90USB1287 AVR microcontroller and the AT86RF230 transceiver. The firmware provided includes low level drivers and application stacks enabling simple point to point communication, IEEE 802.15.4 compliant solutions, and more complex applications based on ZigBee and 6LoWPAN. Updated source code, libraries and documentation for the applications are available from the Atmel web site. PC software is also provided, including a demo and a management suite for setup, configuration and management of wireless networks. Key features include wireless protocol analyzer and Over-The-Air upgrade (OTA). The AT86RF230 offers industry best RF performance with a link budget of 104 dB and gives up to 3 times the range of competitor radios. This results in an outdoor range of up to 700 m with the high gain PCB antenna used on the Raven board. Current consumption in active mode is only 15 mA and down to 20 nA in sleep mode. AVR picoPower devices consume as little as 340 uA in active mode at 1.8V running from the internal RC oscillator at 1 MHz. In power-save mode it is 500 nA with a real time counter running, and 100 nA in power-down mode. picoPower AVRs are pin-, performance-, and code-compatible with existing AVR microcontrollers giving designers flexible hardware options for small, medium sized and complex wireless networks. eSOL, a leading developer of realtime embedded software solutions, announced the addition of an isochronous transfer mode and an Audio Class Driver to its PrUSB (R) / Host product. PrUSB/Host is a full and comprehensive embedded USB host protocol stack from eSOL that includes the low-level USB driver and multiple class drivers. The addition will allow USB host-based products to receive audio streaming in realtime over the standard USB connection from portable music players.

ADLINK Technology Inc. (TAIEX: 6166), a global supplier of test and measurement products announced the release of the PCI-6202, a four channel, 16-bit resolution analog output (AO) card featuring a differential non-linearity of less than one least significant bit (DNL < 1 LSB). The PCI-6202 is ADLINK's first 16-bit AO card to provide hardware-timed waveform generation supporting a simultaneous updating rate for 4 analog output channels simultaneously at 1 MS/s per channel.
NEC Electronics Corporation (TSE:6723) announced that the company has developed a new line of 16-bit All Flash[TM] microcontrollers (MCUs). Built in the NEC Electronics' high-performance 16-bit 78K0R CPU core, the 22 MCUs in the 78K0R/Kx3-L line-up are optimized for compact, low power systems that are driven by battery and enabling Ultra-Low Power applications. Samples will begin shipping in August.
Analog Devices, Inc. (NYSE: ADI) introduced a high-bandwidth MEMS vibration sensor to enable better monitoring of equipment performance and reduce costly downtime due to unforeseen system failures on the factory floor. The new ADXL001 industrial vibration and shock sensor for the first time allows designers of industrial process control instruments to cost-effectively incorporate high-performance, dependable high-bandwidth vibration monitoring into their applications.
In the wake of personal navigation devices' success, cellular carriers have started to offer on-board and off-board navigation solutions, as well as a range of LBS (Location Based Services) such as friend finder and local search on GPS handsets. Community and social-networking-related functionality is also becoming popular and is expected to boost GPS-enabled handset uptake as carriers, handsets manufacturers, and service providers look to capitalize on the LBS trend.

Intel dooms USB 3.0 before it even comes out
Intel is at it again, releasing a new and improved USB 3.0 but is pulling the same B.S. they did with USB 1.0. Any company that qualifies as a competitor to Intel, this includes any motherboard, chipset, or CPU manufacturer(including mobile devices), will have to wait 6 months until after Intel comes out with the spec to release products.

ICS Triplex has delivered its first UK built Turbine and Compression Control System to CNR International (UK) Limited (CNRI). Kontron CP6014 CompactPCI Processor Board
The Kontron CP6014 is a 6U CompactPCI processor board with two 45 nanometer quad-core Intel Xeon L5408 processors, Intel 5100 Memory Controller Hub (MCH) chipset, and Intel I/O Controller Hub 9R. The Kontron CP6014 CompactPCI processor board targets storage, wireless infrastructure, security, voice, and the medical market segments. Taken in conjunction with the advantages of Virtualization software, the Kontron CP6014 can now address new data-intensive applications such as video recognition and medical imaging. The quad-core Intel Xeon processor L5408 interfaces to the baseboard via the 771 land socket and is based on 45nm technology, which reduces power consumption, increases switching speed, and significantly increases transistor density over the previous 65nm technology. The L5408 has a power envelope of 40W and supports a core frequency of 2.13GHz, a Front Side Bus of 1066MHz, and an on-die L2 cache of 12 MB (2×6 MB). The Kontron CP6014 is an 8HP dual-slot solution designed with a multitude of onboard IO functionality. To eliminate the bottleneck of a parallel bus structure, the Kontron CP6014 supports a local PCI-X 64-bit / 133MHz on PMC-slot or a PCIExpress X4 on the XMC. For faster memory performance, Kontron's 6U CompactPCI board supports up to 32GB DDR2 memory (4 DIMMs sockets) at 533/667MHz and Intel I/O Acceleration Technology (Intel I/OAT) DMA for fast data transfer. There is additionally a VGA interface and a VGA controller on a PCI-E bus ATI M72 that supports CRT. The Kontron CP6014 takes full advantage of the Intel 5100 MCH chipset, which contains two main components: the Memory Controller Hub (MCH) for the host bridge and the Intel 82801IR I/O Controller (ICH9R) for the I/O subsystem. The first version has a .5 mm deep channel for overlays (typically a printed lexan substrate with pressure-sensitive adhesive on the back side) to be placed.
National Instruments (Nasdaq: NATI) announced the release of two new bus-powered M Series data acquisition (DAQ) devices for USB that deliver faster sampling rates and more digital I/O features than previously released bus-powered M Series devices for USB. The NI USB-6212 and USB-6216 are available with 68-pin SCSI mass termination, screw terminals or 50-pin IDC connectivity to provide multiple connectivity options.

STMicroelectronics Nomadik STn8820 + STw4820 Chipset
STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) recently introduced a chipset that couples ST's new multimedia application processor with a companion audio and power-management chip. The platform raises the bar in mobile multimedia, enabling smart phones and other portable devices to record and share high-definition video clips, receive mobile TV, playback days of hi-fi music, and deliver a state-of-the-art 3D gaming experience. A key element of the new chipset, ST's Nomadik® STn8820 application processor, combines distributed high-performance multi-core processing with ultra-low power consumption. The device integrates programmable smart accelerators for high-definition video, multi-channel audio, DSC-class (Digital Still Camera) imaging and 2D/3D graphics, together with a powerful general-purpose ARM1176 core running at up to 532MHz. Manufactured in ST's 65nm low-power CMOS process, the STn8820 handles video at up to HD 720p resolution and plays all major standards, such as H.264 and VC-1, enabling video-on-the-go on any HDTV set. The embedded imaging engine produces high-quality still images at up to 8-megapixel resolution. The audio engines deliver days of music playback in hi-fi quality and the display and graphics engines enable 3D user interfaces and vivid gaming experiences by leveraging the OpenGL-ES2.0 geometry peak performance of 33 million Polygons per second. A Nomadik companion chip, the STw4820, integrates supply and power management for both the application processor and device peripherals. The highly configurable and programmable chip features a +100dB audio codec sub-system, accessory detection capabilities and a touchscreen interface. An embedded high-speed USB-OTG (USB On-The-Go) transceiver offers fast data transfer and synchronization. With its high level of integration, the STw4820 reduces component costs and board-area requirements with no compromise in functionality. Compared with solutions based on several chips and discrete components, ST's new audio and power manager saves as much as 30% of the Bill-of-Materials and 40% of the device footprint. In addition to smart phones, ST's new Nomadik chipset can be used in mobile Internet devices, mobile computers, portable multimedia and navigation devices, and in-car entertainment systems. Freescale Flexis JM Microcontroller Series
Freescale Semiconductor recently introduced its Flexis(tm) JM family of microcontrollers (MCUs) to help designers easily incorporate USB connectivity into a wide range of consumer and industrial applications. The Freescale Flexis JM family includes the new 32-bit MCF51JM128 (JM128) ColdFire® MCUs and the 8-bit MC9S08JM60 (JM60) devices The JM60 and JM128 USB devices are software- and pin-compatible, enabling designers to migrate quickly and easily from simple 8-bit designs to more complex application designs that require 32-bit performance. Samples of the Flexis JM devices are available now. The 8-bit Flexis JM60 devices are currently available in volume quantities. Volume production for the 32-bit Flexis JM128 devices is planned for September 2008. The suggested resale price (USD) for 10,000-piece quantities of the 32-bit JM128 MCUs starts at $3.65, and $2.90 for the 8-bit JM60 devices. The 32-bit JM128 devices integrate a controller area network (CAN) module, which is ideal for linking industrial automation and control systems. For developers seeking 32-bit performance and flexible USB connectivity, the JM128 MCUs include an integrated USB controller that supports USB 2.0 full-speed host, device and On-The-Go (OTG) configurations. NEC Electronics America, Inc. strengthened its mid-size industrial offering with the addition of four new amorphous-silicon thin-film-transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) modules ranging in size from 8.4 to 12.1 inches from NEC LCD Technologies. The new modules deliver improved visibility for a variety of industrial applications, including factory automation equipment and measuring instruments.

GE Fanuc V7768 and V7769 6U VMEbus SBCs
GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms recently announced the V7768 and V7769 6U VMEbus single board computers. Both single board computers offer the Intel® Core(tm)2 Duo processor operating at 2.16GHz and the Mobile Intel 945GME Express Chipset. The dual slot V7769, which provides dual SAS (Serial-Attached SCSI) connectors on the front panel, can optionally be configured with an on-board 2.5" SATA hard drive. It features three PCI-X PMC slots, allowing for maximum user-defined connectivity. The single slot V7768 can also be expanded via the PMC237 mezzanine board to provide legacy PMC functionality. The V7768 and V7769 are the first products from GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms to leverage the power of Intel's dual core architecture in conjunction with the Universe(tm) II PCI-to-VME bridge from Tundra Semiconductor. RadiSys Procelerant CE945GM2A COM Express Module
The Procelerant(tm) CE945GM2A, from RadiSys Corporation (NASDAQ:RSYS), is a new COM Express module for value-priced industrial automation, gaming, and test & measurement applications. The Procelerant CE945GM2A replaces older ETX technology at a comparable price point, enabling high-speed serial interface options such as PCI Express, Serial ATA (SATA), and gigabit ethernet. Based on the value-priced Intel Celeron M processor 440, the Procelerant CE945GM2A allows customers to achieve higher processor performance at a value entry point using the COM Express modular form factor. International Business Machines Corporation (NYSE: IBM) and Matheson Tri-Gas, Inc., the largest subsidiary of Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corporation, Japan, announced that they have signed a unique, four-year agreement to jointly develop new manufacturing materials and processes that will enable the next generation of semiconductor technology for 32nm and beyond.
