AN-876: Application Note 876 Inter-Operation of the DS14C335 with +5V UARTs

An important requirement for most Flash-memory-based systems is the ability to update firmware when installed in the end product. This ability is referred to as in-application programming (IAP). The purpose of this application note is to provide general guidelines for creating an IAP application. The STM3210B-EVAL board was used to validate the IAP driver.

This is the demo which was presented at Embedded World 2007. The demo acquires angle and distance from a compass and a ultrasound receiver, sending them to a remote system using an XBee module connected through UART. On the PC side, then, a GTK graphical application (not available for download) displays the data in a polar plot. Board schematics, PCB and software available as a template under ERIKA Enterprise.

This application note gives advice on using the ASC peripherals present in the ST10 and in particular, the asynchronous operations will be considered. A brief guide in the configuration of the peripheral and how to connect it to an RS232 interface or RS485 network is followed by an analysis of the sources of timing problems and how to minimize them to allow correct and error-free communications.
