Samsung's 256GB SSD
Making double the SSD (Solid State Disk) capacity every 12 months. This was declared from Jim Elliott, marketing vice president for Samsung memories section, last year when Samsung's 128GB SSD was launched. Samsung has kept its promise: now the 256GB SSD is in the market.
The Corean society wants to acquire the leadership in the SSD area because the SSDs are light and extremely fast and require less energy than traditional hard disks. So the SSD technology could substitute the running data storage systems in the portable devices very early, increasing their autonomy and decreasing their dimensions. Samsung's 256GB SSD is compatible with MLC-flash SATA II standard and is based on multilayer cell NAND flash memory. Originally it was designed to have sequential read and write speeds of 200 MB/s and 160 MB/S, but Samsung's engineers say that it can reach 220 MB/s and 200 MB/s respectively.
Moreover it should consume only 1.1 watts of power versus two or more watts for a comparable hard disk drive. Samsung's 256GB SSD, according the Corean engineers of course, can store 25 high-definition movies (10 GB each) in just 21 minutes Vs. 70 minutes than a traditional HD and can delete permanently 256 GB of data in about 2.5 minutes. The price? At $2 per gigabyte the price/performances ratio is the best.
