Recording Vehicle Collisions

Download PDF version of the Article

Creating a system that can record video during life threatening events like accidents and acts of vandalism would be important for all concerned. Not only can the recording provide better evidence compared to testimony. Aside from the video captured, the system would allow for multiple vantage points and allowing for other important data like GPS, speed and location information. It would also allow for split second decision analysis during the event like stepping on brakes, hazard lights, impact analysis and other important data. The system components would be digital cameras with compression system for the data gathered. Then all the pertinent data would be stored and allow for playback for analysis purposes. The same system for MP3s would be in order. If audio data is also gathered, then the time stamping and the timing would be essential to complete a full picture of the event. This taken together with all the other pertinent information mentioned can give investigators all the facts to make a full anc complete determination of the fault and damage in the event.

Automotive cameras

At the moment I am (still) working as a hardware automotive engineer, and our company is designing and manufacturing video camera system for parking assistance.

Our cameras are not intended for what this article describes, but I think it is a good idea and...I am going to raise the question further up the chain of command.

Are you aware of any type of vehicle having such a "black box" device installed either as default equipment or as an optional?

Cristian

Some questions

PIC32 is powerful enough for more tasks. I wonder if the project is an open source one? I can not access the linked pages so far. (I am in Shanghai, China).

I would like to add more precache features to it. That means the cameras are always working and recording the video steams, when the collision happens, the cached video can be stored permenantly. The overall effect is capturing the whole process finally.

However, any security systems are difficult to design in a new car model. Especially in this hard age.

Re: Some questions

Actually, this is exactly what the system intends to do. Too bad you cannot see the original pages, they are from the PIC32 Design Challenge contest on the microchip forum.

You are not allowed to view that?! I knew China had some internet restrictions but also to technical web pages? Surprising...

To sum up, the system would really store the video data in case of a collision. The original web page is really detailed making provision for two separate memories, out of which a permanent one, in which a PC compatible video file would be stored. It would also monitor speed, break lights, pedal position etc, making virtually a black box of the car.

There are though many legal problems with that...

Cristian

P.S.
Are we allowed to copy/paste here as a comment the content of the PIC32 Design Challenge web page for allan to see? At least the text...

Yes, Cristian! You can
