Nova - The Operating System Made in Cuba
Finally Cuba has own Linux operating system: “Nova“. The Cuban government believes that the U.S. security agencies can access to Microsoft codes and for this reason it wants to move away from Microsoft operating systems. The Microsoft software runs most of the Cuban computers and this could constitute a huge threat for the Cuban population (according the Cuban government), moreover the U.S. embargo against Cuba makes very difficult for the Cuban people to get the Microsoft software legally and to update it. So the Cuban variant of the Linux operating system has been launched this week, but Nova is only a part of a government project. This project wants to free the Cuban population from the U.S. hegemony and power. Nova has a graphic interface that reminds both Windows and Mac and can work with the old processors (like Pentium II) that are, at the moment, very common in the island. The Cuban government hopes that in five years half population will use Linux Nova, it wants to have “ more control “ on the information - technology process.
