A new breed of wireless communication, the XBee radios

Download PDF version of the Article

A wireless network is quite hassle free, no need for those messy wires. XBee modems is one easy way to link between a station to station network. With its error correction feature and accepts AT commands. This is great for an adapter board that is low cost and can be designed to make a wireless serial link.

Designed to operate with its as a break out board. With an onboard 3.5V regulator for smooth clean power for upto 250mA. Adaptable to connect with 5V circuitry like Arduino without damaging the unit itself. It has a level shift circuit. Two indicator LEDs for power and activity so you will know if it is operating. 10 pin 2mm sockets installed for easy upgrade or swapping of IC. All pins that are commonly used are placed on the edge for easy breadboard or wire hookups.

XBe

Tobe honest, the great disadvantage of Zigbee (on which XBee must be based on) is that it only came to the market a while after bluetooth. The same like it was with Intel based PCs and MACs.

XBee is great though we are using similar products in our labs to be able to move equipment around without having to carry around a big bundle of wires every time.

Cristian
