As in any large, mature industry, the PCB industry has undergone significant evolution since its beginnings. Early on, large, monolithic vertical conglomerates usually fabricated every component for the final product, including the PCB. Those were the times where IBM, Olivetti, Alcatel, Siemens and few others could command the resources, capital and time to devout to the development of all aspects.
Pretty soon, however, newcomers came offering just pieces of the pie: design houses specialized in the design of the boards, PCB board manufactures who took those designs and using equipment they initially design and build and later farmed out to specialized houses, manufactured the laminates, for other companies to assemble and surface mount components to it. So in general the industry has gone from vertical integration to labor specialization, from internal solutions to outsourcing.
These mutations continue into the present driven by economies of scale, aggressive development timelines and the need to continue to maintain global presence. Today the industry has being driven even more to outsource capital intensive and labor intensive operations to subcontratists who had develop the expertise to drive costs down to cents per board. The migration to the Far East continues as well where plentiful cheap labor is a big trend pushing many companies to establish presence or contract there for services.
Material suppliers have also expanded their offerings driven by the new requirements for lead free, green boards or specialized applications like automotive, military, and medical. Niche markets do still exist that require very unique materials and processing which drives a good deal of research and funding.
