Download PDF version of the Article

The i.MX51 applications processor represents Freescale Semiconductor’s latest addition to a growing family of multimedia-focused products offering high performance processing optimized for the lowest power consumption. On-chip LCD controller, Ethernet, USB, and DDR2 memory support provide embedded developers with cost-saving integration. Hardware accelerators such as Open GL ES 2.0 and Open VG1.1 are included to enable 2D and 3D graphics. The Multi-Standard Hardware Video Codec engine achieves HD 720p video decode and D1 video encode. Designed to work with the i.MX51, MC13892 is a highly integrated power management and user interface integrated circuit.

i.MX51 applications processor - Product Overview Highlights
The i.MX51 processor features Freescale's first advanced and power-efficient implementation of the ARM Cortex™-A8 core, which operates at speeds up to 800 MHz and includes an extensive offering of hardware accelerated multimedia such as OpenGL ES 2.0 and OpenVG 1.1 graphics and multi-format HD 720p video decode and D1 video encode.Up to 200 MHz DDR2 and mobile DDR DRAM clock rates are supported. The i.MX51 applications processor is supported by the MC13892. It can also be supported by other non-Freescale power management units.

Development Tools Summary

Freescale offers a feature-rich evaluation kit (EVK) demonstrating the capabilities of the MCIMX51 running embedded Linux and Windows Embedded CE 6.0. The evaluation kit includes support for DDR2, SPI NOR, power management (MC13892 on board), NAND, SDIO, USB, Ethernet (via a SPI header), 2 LVDS connectors, DVI-I connector, Mini PCIe, SATA HDD connector, SIM card connector, and 7” WVGA TFT LCD with touch screen. The evaluation kit also has the MC13892 power management chip on board. The i.MX51 EVK BSP provides the drivers necessary to make use of the MC13892 power management & user interface IC and the MC13982 provides the necessary supplies to power the i.MX51 as well as many peripherals.

Product Overview

The i.MX51 family represents Freescale Semiconductor’s latest achievement in integrated multimedia applications processors. This solution is part of a growing family of multimedia-focused products offering high performance processing optimized for low power consumption. The i.MX51 introduces several valuable features such as on-chip hardware accelerators for 2D and 3D graphics as well as a Multi-Standard Hardware Video Codec engine supporting HD 720p video decode and D1 video encode that takes the load off the ARM core allowing for additional software intensive processing. Additionally, the i.MX51 continues to make the industrial and general embedded market a key focus of i.MX with the inclusion DDR2, embedded USB PHY’s, 3.6V I/O support (On certain I/O. See data sheet table 9), 10/100 Ethernet MAC, SDIO connectivity, up to WXGA resolution TFT LCD support, camera sensor interface, and 800 MHz CPU speed that allows customers to reduce their overall system bill of materials cost.
