Hadron Collider: we are still alive!

Download PDF version of the Article

Cern scientists expect to find answers to many important subjects of physics such as the origin of universe, up to now explained with the big bang theory. Since the boson seems tied to the very origin of the universe, hence to the beginning of life, boson is also known as god particle.
Concern is also spreading about the possible dangerous outcoming of the experiment cern scientists are going to perform, since there are rumors that a black hole could be generated along the execution of this test.
One of them commented that "the chance that a sustainable black hole will form and consume the earth is quite small".
There is a joke going around in the latest hours that says :
"quite small chance" sounds better than "we don't know exactly what the hell will happen".
Going back to serious matters, Stephen William Hawking, the world famous British theoretical physicist bet 100 euros that the Higgs will not be found during this test.
Physics is not my turf, but I do wonder, as an electronic engineer, how complex is this lhc control system, and how much accurate and sensitive a measurement system to detect such a tiny particle as a boson (also called Higgs after the British physicist, Peter Higgs) must be?
So while the cern countdown for the first beam is ticking towards the starting ignition, the BIG QUESTION flashes in my mind:
On which kind of microcontroller are the control/measurement systems based on ?

Hadron Collider

Thanks to GOD we are still here!Smile

What's worse than not being

What's worse than not being able to get payday loans? Black holes are far worse on the galactic scale of disasters but may not affect you personally as bad as not being able to get payday loans. A black hole is, in lay terms, a part of space that has such massive gravity that it sucks everything that comes close enough and compresses it into a singularity – a point of infinite density. Right now, scientists in Europe are building the Hadron Collider, which might create artificial black holes. It's not supposed to hurt anything – it won't keep you from getting payday loans if you need them, but people are still worried about it.
