DIY projects & HacknMod
|
DIY projects, hacks are buzzwords in the hobbyists community.
It is funny how serious and hard to study disciplines are involved in many people's hobby. They are necessary for their do it yourself jobs.
These projects can come already boxed out of the shelf from some specialized supplier (why do Mr. Wile E. Coyote and its ACME Boxes come to my mind?).
But many people think this former solution is for sissies. These guys like to get their hands dirty (and also save a bit of money), so they roll up their sleeves and go around armed with a list of material, few bucks, and a lot of patience, coming back with surplus valves, gears from salvage yards, recycled boxes.

We are talking, for example, about mechanics, with people modding and tuning fancy cars.
Or, and you'll pardon us if we are partial to it, electronics, where diy-ers are a vast and heterogeneous population.
Some times they are professionals that use their knowledge to implement a cute gadget, a useless but funny gizmo.
Other times they are amateurs trying with a project/experiment to improve their education on this subject.
Or even youngsters modding their PC to resemble a cross between a traffic light and a freezer (those nasty energy wasting, heat emitting CPUs...).
But most of the times there are people trying to find a solution to one practical problem or saving money doing themselves with a few bucks what could cost on the market a much bigger amount of money.

To all of these people a big aid can come from the web, where infos, tips, tricks and ideas are free, and ready at hand solutions are available at a reasonable price.
Also the web can be used as a show case to publish the diy-er idea or project, look for help, propose it as an Open Source project and create a community to further develop it.

One important site a diy-er should bookmark is hacknmod.com (Hack & Diy projects) . The site looks clean, with no frills, meant for no-crap hobbyists.
It has many interesting categories, from "Airsoft", "Linux" to "USB", "Xbox".
If you fancy spending a few bucks, there is a store for useful items and fancy gadgets (How did I manage to live up to now without having a "Rubber Band Launcher Wooden Pistol Gun"?).
But most important of all there is an endless list of projects for home based do it yourself.
So which ever of the former listed diy categories you apply to, go and have a look at http://hacknmod.com/.

Very useful website!
This is a very useful site in looking for solutions to common everyday requirements...solutions you cannot usually find in text books or user manuals. Thanks!
