The new Red Bridge III HD Video I/O Card from Dayang Technology Development Inc., which is a leading supplier of broadcast quality video products, is enabled by the DSP-optimized Xilinx(R) Virtex(R)-5 SXT family of programmable devices. This integrated solution empowers China with its first high definition video processing with fringe benefits such as PCI Express(R) connectivity, high-speed GTP transceivers and integrated DSP slices. The National Association for Broadcasters (NAB) conference, April 20-23, at the Las Vegas Convention Centre showcased the Red Bridge III card with appreciable response.
Non-linear editing, broadcast graphics and ingest servers are the major applications the RedBridge III is aimed at. Its features include single slot PCIe x8 express bus with SDI and HD-SDI support and, international video standards support with 16-bit on board mixer and 0 frame delay.
The high-speed transceivers available with the Virtex(R)-5 SXT device, as well as a 32-bit MicroBlaze(TM) soft processor core, both provide the performance necessary for bridging HD-SDI to PCI Express connectivity, as well as for the DDRII memory controller function.
"We needed a cost-effective but powerful single chip solution to enable the capabilities required by this very demanding market. The Virtex-5 FPGA-based solution provided an ideal platform for us to integrate critical connectivity and processing capabilities, including DSP functions. The ease of development helped expedite our development process such that we are now the first Chinese supplier of an HD video card to our market," said Mr. Deng Wei, vice president of Dayang.
The Virtex-5 SXT FPGA has the industry’s lowest power consumption transceivers (RocketIO(TM)) which is less than 100mW @ 3.75 Gbps. It was designed with multiple protocols for the purpose of Red Bridge III card.
Finally the Virtex-5 SXT FPGA's integrated DSP capabilities are used to empower the Red Bridge III card with HD image processing at low power needs.
"The Virtex-5 SXT devices are optimized for this type of product through its ability to integrate high performance digital signal processing capabilities for memory intensive video applications and still operate at low power. The support of serial connectivity with our high speed transceivers for protocols such as SDI, HD-SDI, and PCI Express enhances the capabilities this solution offers, and this was a key aspect of the Red Bridge III video card development," said Rob Green, senior manager, Broadcast Marketing at Xilinx.

HD-SDI bit rates
An HDTV I/O card should really have the required speed and power because of the high bit rates involved with SDI and HD-SDI. SDI (Serial Digital Interface) refers to a family of video interfaces standardized by SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) for transport of uncompressed digital video signals. The basic SD-SDI (standard-definition) signal is defined by SMPTE 259M with a bit rate of 270 Mbps. HD-SDI (high-definition SDI) has several variants – SMPTE 292 that has a bit rate of around 1.5 Gbps, SMPTE 372 with around 3 Gbps that utilizes two 1.5 Gbps links, and SMPTE 424 that is a single 3 Gbps link.
