CES2009 ARM Powered Samsung DTVs running Yahoo! Widgets

Hi this is John Donald ARM’s roving reporter at the 2009 Consumer Electronics show. I am talking to Kevin Kendora from Samsung. As I understand Kevin Samsung TVs are very interesting things with Yahoo widgets on Samsung digital television which like the ad we are running on our ARM1176 processor but can you tell us what are the benefits to consumers? Why do I care about widgets? And can you show me since it’s probably easier to show us than talk about it.

Sure absolutely what we are doing this year is very exciting this is something that will be brand new for 2009. A consumer will be able to walk into stores and purchase a brand new television from Samsung this year though we are able to hook it up through the regular cable provider, satellite provider what you have you and watch television. At the same time sometimes there are too many things on TV to choose from or we just can’t find any thing to watch so Samsung will help you entertain yourself this year.

What we are going to do now is just press one button on the remote control and pull up the widgets. I can customize the scroll bar to any widgets that I personally choose and I can also have my family members create their own profiles and make their own widget tool bar. In this widget tool bar will be different categories some of the things that I will be able to look at right now is Yahoo weather so I would be able to check one or five day weather forecast so if I am going to go on vacation I can even look at other cites other things on here is sports scores imagine yourself watching one football game and being able to keep track of all the other NFL games, major league baseball games, hockey games, even college sports.

Some of the other big items on the television will be the ability to actually search on eBay and also YouTube. One interesting note is typically the screen is, is completely full and you are blocking this side of the television but what if someone’s watching television with you and they want to see the whole screen what you will be able to do is press one button and change the aspect of the picture so that the person watching this television show would be able to actually see what’s going on and we can still watch what we are doing over here.

Datacasting - similar application

This is cool stuff and another attempt to converge the PC and television. We plan to do this differently in our Digital TV test broadcast. We chose Japan’s ISDB-T standard, which has a feature called Datacasting. In this system, a TV station can broadcast auxiliary data in the TV screen (similar to widgets) like weather, news, sports data and TV shopping, to name a few. The viewer can interact by simply using the remote control. The upstream path of the TV set or set top box can be an Internet connection or a telephone interface.
