Boot Linux on USB

Download PDF version of the Article

Since the USB is starting to be bootable a lot of enthusiasts have started making programs on Linux platform. If you don’t know yet, Linux runs on open source. It came from its mother program from the Unix operating system(OS). Due to its open source, everyone is free to try different things and tinker with the program codes. Because of this, a lot of variation like Live Linux have been distributed which is bootable and run the OS from one CD or USB drive. What ever OS your hard drive is using, when you boot from the USB then it will be the operating system that will run. The biggest advantage of using your own OS is that you will be familiar to what ever computer or where ever you are since the system you are using is yours.

Lately, the smaller version of Live Linux for distribution was re-written to work for USB drives. This type of OS uses the memory of the system for working the operations and a flash drive instead of a hard drive for data storage. The read-write capability of the USB drive is better than the CD.

The Puppy Linux originally made as a 'live CD' Linux notable for its very small footprint. All of its applications are loaded into memory if the PC has a memory of at least 128MB of RAM, so you wont need to load from a CD. Instructions and also wizards for producing a USB drive version of Puppy are included on the CD. This OS named 'Flash Puppy' is the name for this example, it is very simple to install and run. The USB drive is formatted in FAT file system not FAT32 before processing.

Download the puppy OS from the Linux site. It will be an .ISO file that can create and burn a CD. After creating the Puppy CD, boot from CD to load it. The desktop window of Puppy Linux will appear next. From the start button go to 'utilities\install puppy USB drive. The USB installation dialog will appear. After feeding the right information it will be formatted and the necessary files will be installed on the USB drive. Restart, set your PC’s BIOS and boot from the USB drive.
