Atmel transcends beyond other companies in 6-pin Microcontroller technology.
The Atmel microcontroller is 6 times the performance of another similar sizes microcontroller.
Atmel brought to the market its new picoPower™ AVR® ATtiny10, which has 1K bytes of programmable Flash memory, 32 bytes of internal SRAM, up to 12 MIPS of processing throughput, 8-bit A/D converter, analog comparator, and a 16-bit timer with PWM. All this in a 6 pin device which is perfect for size constrained high volume consumer applications.
With the use of the AVR CPU the ATtiny10 has the ability to provide 6 times the performance of any other similar sized microcontroller in the market. It also has very low power consumption because of its power saving sleep modes, combined with Atmel’s picoPower technology.
"When you see the 2x3 mm SOT-23 package you get surprised by the high performance inside a small device. It houses an analog comparator, four A/D converter channels, a 16-bit timer counter that can run two phase and frequency correct PWM outputs, and last but not least a very powerful CPU," said Jukka Eskelinen, Director, tinyAVR Product Marketing.

The AVR microcontroller development tools used are the same for all TinyAVR micrcontrollers. The AVR Studio® AVR integrated development environment is available free of charge on Atmel's website.

AVR ATtiny programmer
AVR ATtiny microcontrollers can be programmed using several kinds of programmer boards, either commercial products or self-made circuits. The following link presents a simple and promising circuit: ATTiny Board.
The programming software IC-PROG is also requested.
I did a similar project for the PIC microcontroller and it it still working very well.
ATMEL picoPower
It is not difficult for Atmel to claim market leadership in such a narrow segment (only 6-pin micros!).
I have previously met other marketing guys from various companies claiming for instance they are market leaders in FPGAs with xxx gates and yyy pin count when you use zzz clock. Their words actually meant that they have a highlighted product that happens to be better than their competitor.
I have not done a comparison myself, but it would be nice to see one between Atmel picoPower and Microchip nanoWatt technologies.
